CBD can help humans with pain, inflammation, anxiety, and sleep but is it safe to assume it works the same for dogs?
Presently, no US state allows licensed veterinarians to prescribe CBD for animals.
Many shops are now offering products that contain CBD for pets because some dog owners claim it can treat pain, arthritis, epilepsy, and cancer. Currently, there is no conclusive study that explains what CBD does to a dog’s system.
We know that CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system in mammals, which helps to maintain homeostasis I.e. the balance of the organism.
There have been only a few formal studies regarding the safety of CBD in dogs Its dose and toxicity levels still require more studies. CBD products are not approved by the FDA for use in animals, either as drugs nor as food.
In a 2016 article by Dr. Carlton Gyles, dogs are reported to have a higher number of endocannabinoid receptors in the brain compared to humans. It was suggested that dogs might be more susceptible to the toxic effects of cannabis than humans.
